The portion of the Sistine Chapel that is at one end of the church that has a blue background was painted by Michelangelo, but was done 25 years after the ceiling. There is a small patch that is a dark square in the lower right of the image, is a portion that they left intact after the cleaning (restoration) of the ceiling (completed in 1994) to show what it was like before. Hard to imagine that back in the age there was no electric lighting and everything that lit the interior left behind soot. Indeed there have been several "restorations / cleanings" over the centuries since it was first painted.
The 2 images of the ceiling here have been uploaded with a higher resolution so you can see some of the general details of the wide angle images and will best be viewed if you click on the "original" selection.
