Monument Valley NTP - Shadow of Left Mitten on the Right Mitten Bluff

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

Calculations indicated the West Mitten shadow would be on top of the East Mitten on March 30th for 2018, but I went down early to see if it might be close enough to capture it before and after the 30th. Also the clouds low to the horizon might make shadow difficult or impossible to see on the selected date, so why not play it safe.

This was the view on March 29th. Indeed the Moon was higher on this date, but it appears the shadow overlapped perfectly, so what would it look like on the 30th. There were some low clouds on the opposite horizon at this time so the shadows were not quite as sharp as they should have been, but not enough to completely ruin the shadow. A clear horizon would give a slightly sharper shadow though.

The shadow can only occur twice a year to be best aligned, somewhere around March 29-30, and again around September 12, but will the Moon be full during these dates? Here is a list of upcoming nearly Full Moon dates during the Mitten Shadow events; Sept 12, 2019 (99%), Mar 29, 2021 (97%), Sept 11, 2022 (96% past full), Mar 30, 2026 (96%), Sept 13, 2027 (97%) and Mar 29, 2029 (100% full).
