Although this was a Total Lunar Eclipse, it was best viewed from the other side of the world. As can be seen here the eclipse was just starting as it was getting lower to the northwestern horizon. A cloud bank moved in shortly after this image was taken, interrupting the remaining 1/2 hour of the eclipse before moonset. Even then the Moon would only be about 2/3rds eclipsed by that time. Taken in Urbandale, Iowa (a suburb of Des Moines), the tower is 120 feet tall and 16 feet in diameter and has some 1.8 million glass tiles on the surface, and is topped by blue light. It was very cold out during this very early morning session.
