ANTELOPE CANYON - Beam Me Up

Antelope Canyon NTP

This was taken with a little point and shoot 5MP camera on a tripod. This was before I got a DSLR, so I was upset that I could not stop the f/ stops down and taken a longer exposure so the light beam would be a complete shaft of light. Not being able to control that I had to do the best I could with what I had. How is the beam of light illuminated you ask? The dirt on the floor of the canyon is a very fine red sand, so fine is is a powder. Once you have your camera set, you toss it up into the air, start your exposure, and let it rain down to the ground, then stop your exposure if it was not already preset. I call this image, "Beam Me Up" as it looks very similar to that of the Star trek transporter beaming someone to the Enterprise, and the unidentified form of a torso and legs and head can still be made out. I hope to return to this site in the future to do more using a DSLR and explore what else I can do when I can completely control the camera.

Photographer Peter Lik became famous for a similar photo that was taken near the same time as my photo, his he called "Ghost". I took a poll at an art show and asked if they liked my photo or Peter's better, and most of the time they liked mine better, compare for yourself; http://www.lik.com/thework/canyons-arches/ghost.html

Frankly I have several images that look similar to Peter's from several locations around the world and mine are no worse than his. Check them out.
