Comet West was one of the great comets of the last half of the 20th century and was a bright naked eye comet. It very nearly mirrored the path of Comet Bennett 5 years earlier, also in March and passing through the same star fields. Although Bennett also had a secondary tail, it was not as well seen as the blue ion tail that Comet West sprouted.
