Shot from my bedroom window and I had to open it very slowly as this is the most timid Pileated I have seen this year ( have seen seven) . He's been coming most mornings to chisel away at a 10 foot section of this Manitoba Maple ( about 100 years old) Luckily its a branch I was planning on cutting back as it has very little bark left on it. I'm hoping he cuts it down for me :-) Pretty sure he is getting Box Beetle larvae as there were 100's that dropped /flew out of these trees this past Fall ( cyclical as I had not seen this in the 15 years we have lived here). There are a few other holes he created in this branch ...this is the largest...one more shot for context to follow....see previous shot
