The smaller of the two Great Horned Owlets finally left the nesting area a couple of nights ago or maybe early yesterday morning. I found her late yesterday and I am pretty sure this is her again from this afternoon/early evening. She is quite clumsy compared to he first owlet whos was flying from tree to tree a few days ago. Its mother was nearby and down on the forest floor hopping from log to log looking for food ( muskrats I think) Jumior here split its time looking at several birds that were attempting to harass it, watching mom hunt and sleeping, preening etc...Twice a red squirrel came close to me and the owlet was fixated so it already knows its prey even if it hasn't got the experience necessary to catch it...
