Even at F9 there's no way I am getting enough DOF for a shot like this and I didn't want to decrease the shutter speed for more DOF since I was hand holding the 500. So I focused on the drake in behind and then refocused on the drake in front on my second shot. I stacked the two images by layering them in PS and erased the blurry drake in front to reveal the in focus drake from the second shot underneath...voila...both drakes in focus.
