Eastern Screech Grey Phase

Only got a few shots of this bird...my appearance was probably all it needed to go as many chickadees, cardinals, juncos, house finches, house sparrows etc...were mobbing this owl when I arrived....a very noisy scene.

Those are brave birds to say the least. I've seen birds mob screech owls before but never actually go inside a cavity. Maybe they felt brave in numbers or the little owl had taken a few family members or friends.

It was definitely upset as just about every bird in the neighborhood was mobbing it. I didn't even know there were that many chickadees and house finches in the vicinity. After it hid in a cavity in an old tree, the birds then swarmed the opening of the cavity...5 minutes later they all went about their business but 15 minutes after that the chickadees returned with a male cardinal and a few house finches and mobbed the cavity once more but only for a few minutes . Ten minutes later two nuthatches and a hairy woodpecker voiced their collective scorn with the nuthatches taking turns going into the cavity ...a few inches...and the woodpecker kept its distance :-) So all to say that nobody wants him around except for me. But then I'm not on the menu :-)

It doesn't look very happy...
