General Douglas MacArthur's Lockheed C-121A Constellation called 'Bataan' is located at the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Grand Canyon, AZ. #48-613, c/n 2605
This aircraft served as the personal transport of MacArthur who was the Supreme
Commander of the Allied Powers (S.C.A.P.). MacArthur named it BATAAN to honor the American POW who endured the notorious death march.
Highlights of 'BATAAN'
- Flying command post during the Korean operations, incldg the Inchon landings.
- Flew MacArthur to Wake Island in 1950 for his only meeting with Pres. Truman where MacArthur was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.
- Flew MacArthur to Andrews AFB in Maryland where he was relieved of his command by President Truman.
- Declared as surplus in 1965 after it flew a mercy mission in the Philippines.
- Phil. gov't was interested in preserving the BATAAN but did not want to pay for flying it from the US to Manila.
