30 Jan 04 - Hapuka

My wife and I went fishing today with Peter Lamb and some work colleagues. This little fellow is a hapuka or groper, pulled up from 150m. Thats me with one of the fish, Arya took the photo

The fate of the fish - why they become part of the food chain of course. They are delicious eating. Prior to returning home the fish are filleted or cut into steaks and divided equally amongst the people on the boat. On this trip there were 18 of us, so we all ended up with about 4kg of fish each. In our freezer at home, we now have about 6 fish meals. There are strict limits the boat must adhere to, so do not worry about dwindling fish stocks.

What's the fate of the fish? Just curious.

These groper, or Hapuka as they are called locally, are caught with bait in deep water. My one is actually quite small, 60kg fish are not uncommon, although the largest on our day out was about 18kg. The gear used is specialised and is "hired" for the day, including harnesses etc. The water depth is about 150m, and they are basically just muscled to the surface. The line - just guessing, probably 100lb braded line? All a bit different to my fly fishing gear.

Nice photo and fish. It's great to see some people enjoying the warmer weather. The only fishing we have right now is ice fishing.
