Hearing on Air Pollution held by the State of Texas in Midlothian Texas on Feb 1, 2007

This hearing held by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality dealt with receiving testimony from interested parties and the public regarding proposed revision to 30TAC Chapter 114,115 and 117 which includes pollution from Motor Vehicles, Gasoline and Deisel Powered items, Compressors, Cement Kilns, Hot Water Heaters, Utility power Plants and other sources and to bring the 9 county North Texas Region into compliance with the FCAA (Federal Clean Air Act). Texas is required to submit SIP revisions by June 15, 2007 for demonstrating attainment with the eight-hour ozone national ambient air quality standard.

There were approximately 50 interested parties 14 of whom spoke to the State Representatives who included some engineers and other staff members.

The speakers ranged from concerned citizens, to Reverands and other Ministers, Judges, members of The Blue Skies Alliance, The Downwinders at Risk, individuals who have breathing problems, and a person with terminal brain cancer. Out of the 14 speakers only one was for the polluting sources and he was a son of a worker at one of the plants. Each speaker was given up to 5 minutes to speak or give their presentation.

The meeting started at 6 pm and ended approximately at 7:45.

It was sound recorded and also recorded by a court stenographer as was the Dallas hearing.

There will be an open period to comment to the state by mail or email up to Feb 12, 2007 at http://www5.tceq.state.tx.us/rules/ecomments

As of July 7, 2010 TXI has said that is will no longer use the 3 wet Kilns to burn hazardous materials and have given back their permit to do so to the state of Texas. The Downwinders at Risk succeeded in shutting down the worse single source of pollution in the North Texas area, in fact the kilns have been not used since 2008-supposedly because of less need for cement.
