The French Quarter

The French Quarter experienced no flooding from Katrina because it is on higher ground, though sinking which can be seen in the fire hydrants across the area, but there was flooding just to the north and west of the Quarter. The most major damage in the area was the roof of the old US Mint being ripped off which allowed a lot of water infiltration into the museums that were housed in the historic building, the stalls of the old French Market and the Catholic Basilica in Jackson Square which had water infiltrate through one of the bell towers and flood out the old majestic pipe organ. There were other more minor damages in the French Quarter but the vast majority of the buildings took the Hurricane quite well with basically a giant power washing scrubbing away decades of pollution from the structures.
