The back of El Castillo facing the Caribbean Sea

The two windows at the top of the wall were used to guide Maya sailors through the hole they had carved in the reef just off the coast. The Maya priests would place a candle on an altar in the building and when the sailors could see the light through both windows at the same time they knew if they headed straight for the coast they would pass through the reef safely.
