Naveen- It's hard to estimate how close we were, since it was dark at the time. You can get some idea from this photo:http://www.pbase.com/petolino/image/68478437 . The specks at the top of the peak are either people or people-sized structures, and the small glowing red spot in the smoke below the sun is lava.
