My friend Nancy and I drove to Johnson City today to pay our last respects to Lady Bird Johnson as a ceremonial funeral cortege passed through the town where her husband was born, and my friend Nancy grew up. I’m so glad I went. To many of you I’m sure this is history, but I lived through it and always admired Mrs. Johnson’s courage, fortitude and her compassion. She was much loved in this part of the world and many tributes flowed in the past few days since her death at the age of 94. I wasn’t going to attend, but was encouraged by my dear friend Coleen. Thanks, Coleen.
It was difficult to choose a photo to represent the day, but I loved the three little boys saluting as the hearse passed them. I was also touched by the young man holding some of Lady Bird’s much loved wildflowers as he waited.
We signed the condolence book at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park near where we watched the cortege.
