I started the day at 8:00 am at the Emily Ann Theatre’s Veteran’s Memorial Plaza. The ceremony was hosted by VFW Post 6441 of which my husband was a lifetime member. The flags of each branch of the service and the POW flag were raised by veterans of each branch as their service anthem was played. Then the American flag was raised. As TAPS sounded the flags were lowered to half staff. A very moving tribute.
At 10:00 am I went to the Wimberley cemetery where the mayor spoke and the VFW again hosted a very moving tribute. As TAPS sounded, local Boy Scouts of Troop 127 lowered the American flag to half staff. Yesterday they placed flags on the graves of all veterans.
I spent the rest of the morning taking photos, appreciating my freedom and giving thanks for the many men and women who have served our country with valor and courage. John's career was in the Air Force. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. I was not a part of his military career, but have heard about it from his children. He was proud to have served his country and I was proud of him.
My thoughts and prayers go out today to the men and women serving around the world, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan and to the wives, children, mothers, fathers, grandparents and all who wait for them to return.
So do I. Thank you doesn’t seem enough.
