19-NOV-2006 Petesie

At least it's not a butterfly!

As you may know, I live on a hilltop on a ridge, overlooking the valley. As hard as it is for me
to believe, at one time this was the ocean floor. My five acres are covered with fossils of
all kinds. Oysters, fossilized snails, and many others.
I'm not sure what these are called, but they are everywhere.
I will try to get some better photo, but I have always found it so fascinating!

Very interesting petesie. That same inland sea, or ocean, was here as well. The valley in which I live at the base of the Smokies sits on limestone, a sedimentary rock formed by that ancient sea 70 million years ago.

Wouldn't you love a view through a time capsule just to see how it all looked !! Great find.

I'm glad you explained this. I thought it was a cow pie! ;-)

Wonderful! It just goes to show that nothing is forever. Here in Minnesota a little over 10,000 years ago over a mile of ice towered over the landscape. Hundreds of thousands of years prior to that most of Minnesota was at the bottom of the ocean...
