Kamchatka- The Kuril & Commander Islands July 2009

"Cruising the Ring of Fire" is a breathtaking expedition .The large number of live volcanoes on the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Kuril Islands has given this region the reputation of "The Pacific Ring of Fire".
The Kamchatka Peninsula is a land of stunning bays and snow-capped volcanoes and supports a great diversity of wildlife. The Kuril Island chain is made up of 32 islands which stretch between Russia and Japan across the Bering Sea. The Kurils are all formed by volcanoes.
The seas washing these isolated coasts are among the most productive in the world.
The area teems with birds and marine mammals. Huge bird colonies and large seal rookeries are found along the cliffs and coastline. During the summer of 2009 I had the opportunity to visit ths part of the world on a Russion expedition vessel. The tour was organised by Heritage Expeditions from New Zealand.I would like to show you a selection of images from this expedition on my site and I hope you will like them.
