Hollywood Lighting was a style of photography practiced by the great studio photographers in the 1940s and 1950s . Immediately coming to mind for their dramatic artistry are Horst P. Horst, George Hurrell, John Engstead and Clarence Sinclair Bull. Generally working in monochrome, they usually used a three-or four-light setup that encapsulated harsh directional key lights and fills using grids, soft boxes, reflectors and snoots, often shot against a stark background. Today we can replicate these dramatic pictures using specialised light modifiers.
