Ximending is a busy shopping and entertainment neighborhood in the Wanhua District (萬華區) of Taipei. It is famous for its youth subculture. Several streets are designated as pedestrian only.
Its name is a combination of Ximan (west gate), and Ding (Japanese chō for neighborhood). In 1902, while under Japanese occupation, this area outside the city’s West Gate was developed to resemble Asakusa in Tokyo. Now, it resembles Harajuku (原宿).
