Within the 4 km wide Kilauea Caldera is the 0.9 km Halemaumau pit crater.
Viewed from the Jaggar Museum, the Halemaumau Overlook is on the opposite edge, above the 3 white patches. Tour buses can barely be discernable.
From 1823 to 1924, Halemaumau was filled with molten lava. The last eruption within the crater was 1982. The ongoing eruption since 1983 is on the lower Southeast Rift Zone, not at the summit here. |
