Französischer Dom originally built in 1701 for the Huguenot (Calvinist) community, who were expelled in 1685 by Louis XIV and settled in Berlin.
The 1785 domed tower was designed by Carl von Gontard who also designed the tower of the German Cathedral on the other side of the Gendarmenmarkt. The towers match each other to give the square a symmetrical look.
