Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446) won the commission in 1419 as the architect of the 90-m high dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. It was completed structurally in 1436 using 4 million bricks.
His statue here in a niche of the Palazzo dei Canonici across from the cathedral looks up at his dome.
