如意輪観音

Nara, Japan view map

Kannon 観音 originated as Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, a minor Hindu male deity.
Because of its alleged ability to hear sufferings, it gradually transformed into a goddess of mercy over the centuries.
This 1738 wooden statue depicts the Kannon with a unisex figure during this transition period. All forms of Kannon wear head gears with images of the Amitabha Buddha.
