The National Gallery of Art consists of two buildings. The original 1941 beaux-arts West Building was designed by John Russell Pope. The 1978 modern East Building was designed by Chinese American I. M. Pei.
The National Gallery of Art is the only museum on the Mall that is not part of the Smithsonian Institute.
