Elephant Emperor (Anax indicus)

The Emperor Dragonflies (Anax) is a group that don't stop to perch but just flies and flies over the pond in search of prey.

I actually drove almost 150 km to get on to one as I really wanted it. I found it over a pond full of lotuses hunting in the company of other species. So I sat down and studied how to go about photographing it. I quickly realized it was flying to low for a sky background (makes it easier for auto focus) and I never noticed it rest. Darn ya, just took a bunch of random pictures but nothing turned out of course.

The bank was steep and uncomfortable. I desperately cried out 'God, stop it!".....ha ha ha...well a minute later it stopped in the air for like 3-4 seconds and by some magic I managed to focus on it!

Very pleasing to say the least! Elephant Emperor (Anax indicus)
