Taiwan March 2025

Pictures from 23d of March - 1st of April, 2025

Taiwan is a very mountainous island with peaks up to 3600m. The island is typical for many islands around the world in that it has been isolated for a long time and therefore has an unique avian fauna. Around 32 endemic species plus even more subspecies is to be found.

The birding centers around finding these endemic birds and many tours manage to see them all or at least close to it.

Along with the endemic birds there are many other attractive birds shared with mainland China and Asia of large.

The infrastructure is excellent, roads well kept, hotels modern, people are friendly, people in the service sector speak English as various levels. The biggest challenge is to find fresh food early in the morning or at lunch as hotels serve breakfast a bit late and restaurants are scarce on the mountains. To make up for that the many many 7-11s and Family Marts are well stocked with both food and drinks. Save the fresh food for supper!

Weather can be unpredictable and go from heavy rain to bright sunshine. The higher levels tend to be misty and more wet.

We followed an established route easily found on eBird and various trip reports.
Hotels are easy to book in advance.

Car hire is available but you need an international license and any damage to your hired car caused by the driver is not covered by insurance even though you pay for extra insurance for 3rd party.

Taiwan is a pleasant experience and thanks to excellent infrastructure readily available.
