Queenstown in Tasmania is the site of a copper mine that destroyed the surrounding environment in the early 1900s.
Sulphur from the refining process plus use of trees in the furnaces for the mine denuded the valley in little over 20 years.
I passed through here in early 1977 and was staggered at the destruction - my perception altered by an expectation born of
association with Queenstown in New Zealand. I passed through again in 2012 and was amazed at the recovery in a mere
35 years when I had thought it would never grow anything again - ever! Isn't nature amazing. One just has to live
long enough to see nature in action!
