When there is stimulation (light, vibration etc) Varroa mites
sit up like this one, ready to leap onto any passing object
- presumably as this is likely to be a honeybee passing in the hive.
While photographing this one, whenever the flash went off, it would
immediately start to move around reaching up, casting about for
something to jump onto.
