Jpat, those are joss sticks, which were sold at a little market stand near a cathedral in La Laguna, Canary Islands/Spain. I do not know exactly what they were made of, but it smelled like sandal wood. They are burnt in prayers. With their fragrance it was a pleasure for the eye (when taking this picture with my *ist D) and for the senses at the same time.
