Buffalo vs Lions
We came across a herd of buffalo, few meters away lions hiding and watching them.
It was late afternoon, at sunset and about 30 minutes from the camp gate closing time.
I pushed the ISO on my camera up in anticipation of some action in the bad light.
What follows was something to remember. Unfortunately I could not capture everything as they were moving right round the car at times and kicking up a lot of dust in the process. The buffalo were trying to chase the lions away, the lions tried to get one separated from the others. Then 1 young bull ran out of patience with the lions and kept on chasing one until he was completely separated from the herd. Then from out of nowhere, 3 other lions attacked him from the back. The buffalo on his back and 4 lions on top of him, let out a fearful bellow, it was then that the other buffalo stampeded towards their mate, got the lions of him, and chased them away again. The ‘dead’ buffalo got up, 2 others started licking his wounds (just too much dust to capture that) and of they went.
At this time we had to hurry back to the camp. Up and out early next morning to see if a kill eventually took place, but no sign of buffalo or lions, not a even a vulture to signal the spot of a killing.
