The church was built because of a vow King Louis XV made when he was suffering a serious illness. Conscruction began in 1758 and was completed in 1789. During the revolution it became the Temple of Glory and was used for the burial of great men. Under Napoleon it was reopened for worship in 1806, but only until 1885, when it returned once and for all to its status as a secular temple.
