Musee d'Orsay

The Musee d'Orsay exhibits work of the second half of the nineteenth century, from 1848-1905 circa irrgardless of expressive means and technique. One of the prinicipal purposes of the new museum was the gather together in one place the collections that up to then had been dispersed in various museums throughout France. The original site of the musee, used to be a train station, the Gare d'Orsay.
The official date for the birth of the impressionist movement was 1874, the year in which, on the occasion of the first independent exhibition of the group, they were first called impressionists after a painting by Monet entitled 'Impression-Sunrise" In the 1880's the movement shifted a bit when artists were looking for another means of expression, Seurat used pointlism (small dots). The impressionists later inspired a group of canadian painters called the Group of Seven in the early 1930's as well as Emily Carr (also Canadian).
