Les Invalides and Point Alexandre III

Les Invalides is a vast complex of buildings that includes the Hotel des Invalides, The Dome and the Church of St. Louis. The construction was ordered by King Louis XIV in 1671. It was built to house old and invalid soldiers who were often forced to beg for a living.
The Dome was erected between 1679 and 1706. Directly under the Dome is the Tomb of Napoleon I. He died on 5 May 1821 on St. Helena but was brought back here in Septmeber 1841 after the French had to get permision from England. Almost the entire city attended the funeral. Like those of an Egyptian pharaoh, the remains where contained in six coffins: the first in tin, the second of mahogany, the third and fourth of lead, the fifth of ebony and the sixth of oak. These were placed in the huge sarcophagus of red granite.
Point Alexandre III was built between 1896 and 1900 and it is named after Czar Alexander III, whose son Nicholas II, inaugurated the bridge. It was built to celebrate the creation of the alliance between the Russians and the French.
