Raft of Medusa, 1819 Theodore Gericault

In 1816 a french frigate ran around Senegal. The officers made a makeshift raft which would soon become packed with one hundred and fifty castaways. Provisions quickly became sparse, and only 15 people would survive the nightmarish ordeal. In order to paint this picture, Gericault obtained parts of corpses; arms, torsos and legs from the HOPITAL BEAUJON nearby.
