"Departure of the Volunteers, called La Marseillaise"

The winged figure is the "Genius of Liberty". This repersents the conscription in 1792 which involved the levying of 200,000 men to defend France against foreign armies allied against the Revolutionaries. This conscription secured its first victory of the Revolution against a foreign power: the Battle of Valmy against Prussia on 20 Sept, 1792. A short while after the Revolutionary Army won a second memorable battle against Austria at Jemmapes. In confronting the ememy, the Nation was unified.
