Arc de Triumph

Located in the large Place de Gaulle; radiating outwards from this square are no less than 12 main arteries. Isolated in the centre stands the powerful and imposing Arc de Triumph, begun by Chalgrin in 1806 under Napoleon, who ordered it as memorial to the Great Army. Completed in 1836, it is larger than the Arch of Constantine in Rome making it the largest victory arch in the world. It is 50m high and 45m wide. All the carvings on the Arc repersent an important battle or moment in French history. Under the Arch, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was placed in 1920.
