08-10-04 - Dolomite Pass Hike - Banff National Park
Leaving Calgary at 4am to get to the Pass at sunrise was a chore. Weather was dark and moody, not a soul around ... nice day for photography.
Added bonus, a dreary drive back to the city was a perfect opportunity to practice my drive-by shootings. Use the lowest ISO setting on your camera and smallest f-stop. Use the darkest filter(s) you have (a polarizer and an ND 4 stacked for me). Shoot through the (passenger) window with very long shutter speeds. Don't worry about the glass. Experiment with all types of pans including against the car motion, up and down and circular. Try keeping the camera aimed at an object while you drive by it, i.e. a horse, a barn, a tree in its fall colours. This can be difficult since the viewfinder will be blacked out by the mirror. Practice works, thank God for digital "film". Also, shooting highway traffic and details on trucks and cars is fun too ... just try not to be too obvious, one doesn't want to be victim of a real drive-by shooting.
