This growth on the creosote bush is a gall, this particular type
called a "tootsie-pop" gall because of its round shape and size.
Although it doesn't look like the rest of the plant, it is a
tumorous part of the plant, produced in response to an attack by
an insect called a creosote gall midge, which lives inside the gall.
