Just a while ago I visited a gallery that showed petrified logs in rocks at the Grand Canyon. So it looks like the great deluge was world wide.

Although the best season to visit Altay is Autumn, it is also very beautiful in winter and spring. As the temperature of Altay and many other places in northern Xinjiang is extremely cold in winter and early spring, you should check the weather and road condition before going. There are range transport between Urumqi and Altay, either by air or by long-range coach, but I do not know the detail. If you want to visit other beautiful place in Xiajiang as well, you may book a 4-WD in Urumgi. For more information, you may search from the web or directly contact the travel agency in Xiajiang.

I would like to visit the Altai from the Chinese side, sometime in spring of 2006, before the snow is gone from the mountains. Any suggestions?

Yes, the leaves in birch forest will turn golden and red in mid-to-late September. It is a good choice to visit Kanas Lake at late Sepember, but you should avoid too close to the golden week of the National Day on the 1st of October. Otherwise, you may be difficult to look for accomodation, or at a much higher cost!

Thanks alot for your information! Yup... we have decided on the dates to be in end september, really excited about it. I have been to xinjiang last july to areas like Yining and Kashgar, seems like this is even a better time to go to see the change of season :) . Hope I can capture some nice pictures too, and importantly, can find areas to charge the batteries of my camera.

Thank you for your visit to my photo gallery! I went to Northern Xinjiang in late September, the best time to watch the fall colour. It may be too cold in some places if you start th trip in October. Northern Xinjang is a beautiful place but the road and transport are not well developed yet. I suggest you to book a 4WD in Urumqi (¯Q¾|¤ì»ô) or join some special tour there. Kazakhstan, a former Republic of USSR, situates in the northwest of Xinjiang. Sayram Lake is a famous lake situated several hundred milometers west of Urumqi. Baisha Lake, which is less famous and most Xinjang people, including drivers, don't know how to go. It is very near to a small town, the Habahe («¢¤Úªe), situated 600-700 Km north of Urumqi. In fact, it is very near to Kazakhstan-Chinese border. I recommend you go to Habahe first and ask the people (e.g. Hotel personels) there. Habahe is more well known for its birch forest (¥Õ¾ìªL), the second largest in China. The Baisha Lake is very near to the birch forest. Last few word, the lake is quite difficult to go. It could not even access by 4WD, you must walk for a few kilomenters in the very soft sands, Unlike Dunhuang (´°·×), there is no camel helping you!

Very wonderful pictures! Planning a trip to the same area in late september this year. When did you take the autumn pictures? Is it too late to see the same sceneries in beginning of october? By the way, where is the Kazakstan border situated & where is the syaram lake & baisha lake?

Simply speaking, it is the northern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (·sæºû§^ªvº¸¦Ûªv°Ï¥_³¡), north of Urumqi(¯Q¾|¤ì»ô). Some of the locations are still inconvenience for travelling and could only be accessible by jeep with special local guide going together. Regular tours are not so common, but seasonal ones may be organized by some local agent in Urumqi/Xiajiang (e.g.¤j¦ÛµM°ê®È¡^or in Hong Kong (e.g. China Tourism ¤¤°ê®È¹C¥Xª©ªÀ¡@or Mordern China Travel¡@²{¥N¤¤°ê®È¦æªÀ).
