Nica29.jpg

I include this photo because Aldo, on the left, is a reminder of the variety one finds among any people. He is from the town of Esteli, which was hard hit during the revolution and civil war. Aldo works as a guide for tourists, and has taught himself English which he speaks with only slightly slower pace than his deliberate and precise Spanish. He is cataloguing orchid varieties and is knowledgeable about Nicaraguan plant life in general. He has also taught himself origami and has designed the masterpieces shown here. He communicates by internet with paperfolding enthusiasts from all over the world and will attend a conference in Peru this fall to meet some of them, thanks to the efforts of friends like Lillian Hall. Lillian is in the center, and on the right is a reggae musician who participated in the music festival at Achuapa. (He has an interesting story as well, being from the Creole-speaking Miskito people on the remote northern coast of Nicaragua, educated in Texas, and now living in Managua.)
