This shows the main entrance to La Catedral de La Asuncion in Leon, the largest cathedral in Central America. Abbey and I waited out an afternoon downpour inside, along with many others who came in to stay dry. It is an awesome structure with huge canvases of the Stations of the Cross along the outer walls. The arches, though massive, are well-proportioned and classical in style. To the right in the photo is one of the lion sculptures associated with the city. Leon was established in 1524 and moved in 1610 after the eruption of the Momotombo volcano destroyed the original city. The cathedral was built in 1754 I believe. Leon is a university city, full of students and thus not surprisingly a politically active and more liberal part of the country. The medical school is considered to be very good.
