She followed a minor road and soon we were going through the University of Nairobi. The campus was verdant, with many lawns, trees and carefully worked topiary. The student residences had been built in grey brick and looked much like student residences anywhere in the world.
I caught sight of the birds.
Then I saw a shapeless heap of litter strewn across the grass of a small meadow. Two upended containers were overflowing with refuse - rotting paper, sanitary towels and decomposing vegetable matter that spread across the lawn
The smell was strong and very unpleasant yet no one took notice of the sight. No one other than the marabou storks.
