A photo record of the Orongorongo Valley Huts in 2012

This was a project I have done to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Taihoa Hut (#67) which occurs in 2013.
The hut numbering system was started by the Wellington Water Board.
Thanks to the Orongorongo Club for their assistance and support.

Hi Roger Tidman Yes Delta Lodge you helped build is still going strong. Its was 50 years old 2023. My father Fred Scarlett passed away 2014, Hans Wildeboer is still alive and living in Taupo.

I remember tramping in over the gut buster when i was a teenager going to say with MacMcGinty and Dave. We used to have good times back in the 60’s. staying at Hebron. Beautiful country!On occasion we would take the buggy around to Palliser Bay as well. Riddiford allowed us to have a key to get through the gates in those days.

Wow.used to go to tainui hit in the 60s with uncle ham and mum.i have all the paintings of the old huts from her book. I would love to visit the valley again.

In the '60's I was involved in building an A frame hut with 2 of my teachers from Wellington technical college. I cannot remember if this was a college project or a private one. the 2 teachers were Fred Scarlett and Hans Wildebore. I think it was downstream from the end of the 5 mile track but I stand to be corrected on this. Can you shed any light on this for me please?

I am a 84yr old Kiwi living in Australia for 20yrs. my first tramp in the valley was in 1947, we slept in the bush with our blankets and rain coats on a long weekend. I saw your book on the internet about the Huts, can you let me know how I can buy one. Regards Bert Hedley.

Over the years I have ventured to many of these huts myself. It is such a unique characteristic of the Orongorongo Valley. While I am very supportive of much that DOC does, their decision to eventually rid the Valley of these huts is wrong. Provided hut owners maintain their huts and care for the surrounding environment they should be allowed to stay. I think the Valley is better for their presence.
