From September 20-25, 2011 the B-17G "Sentimental Journey" and B-25 "Maid In The Shade" made a stop at the Ogden Hinckley Airport in Utah. Over those days I visited on numerous occasions to photograph the aircraft. On one occasion my friend Shane Moss and I stayed until midnight photographing star trails behind the B-17. We had a lot of fun and there is nothing neater than having a B-17 and B-25 all to yourself for several hours. Sadly, after several trips to the airport I made the mistake of deleting the contents of my SD card and lost hundreds of photos. That then required me to visit several more times to retake much of what I had lost. In all, I went to the airport 6 times over a 4 day period. A Steerman trainer and Grasshopper liason aircraft were also there.
A lot of these photos are HDR (high dynamic range). A lot of people use HDR to create a hyper fantastic look to images. That doesn't interest me. I use HDR to attempt to recapture lost exposure if the exposure range of the photo is so high that no single image can catch all the information without under or over-exposure. This shoot presented a lot of high exposure range problems. In post-processing I took my various exposures and tried as best as I could to present a "realistic" look to the subject matter when HDR was done. In other words the HDR images were intended not to look overtly HDR. I hope I succeeded on some level.
All photos were taken with a Canon t1i with various l lenses.
