Courthouse Wash Pictograph Panel

This Barrier Canyon Style (BCS) panel is located in the south-east corner of Arches National Park. The panel is similar to many Barrier Canyon Style panels in that anthropomorphs are the primary design type. These elongated figures are similar to many typical BCS figures in that they are elongated, occasionally armles, legless, and horned. They are most likely shamans or supernatural beings. Red ochre and mountain mahogany were mixed to make the red tint visible on the panel. The two circular shields seem to be superimposed onto the figures giving the impression that they may have been added much later by Anasazi, Fremont, or Ute. These images may have already been thousands of years old by the time the Fremont moved into the area. In 1980 this panel was damaged by people believed to have been attempting ritual desecration. It went through a major restoration afterwords.
