Here is an image of "Doc" Holliday that I did based on the following photo: Doc Photo
The photo was taken during the OK Corral reenactment that takes place in Tombstone, AZ on most days of the year. The figure was digitally painted and then placed against a background provided by Owen's Originals (a photography equipment company). I decided to present the background as if it was a studio backdrop and that required me to make sure that I could place a spotlight and shadow properly. Using a 3D model I posed in Maya I was able to render an image showing the proper location for the spotlight and shadow and that allowed me to paint in a proper representation.
The second image is meant to evoke an old photo look while the third is meant to evoke an old hand-tinted look. The last two are not meant to necessarily portray in any realistic sense what an old sephia or hand tinted photo should look like. As I have little experience with genuine old still photography I have decided to rely on what simply feels right. The vertical streaks in the final two images are actually more reminiscent of old film than still photography. A combination of the VanDerLee OldMovie plugin for Photoshop and the Old Photo plugin for Filter Forge were used for the conversion.
