Trains - mostly Ontario Northland. Taken at Moosonee unless otherwise noted.

I like trains but have relatively limited scope for taking pictures of them so the pictures may get a little monotonous. Some of these pictures are definitely not great shots but are included because they illustrate rail operations at the "end of rail" in Ontario. The Ontario Northland is owned by the Ontario (Provincial) Government. It runs a five (six in summer) times a week passenger train between Cochrane and Moosonee. This train has replaced the former three times a week mixed train and the summer only Polar Bear Express. There are also freight trains twice a week. There is no road access to Moosonee so the train and air service are the only public carriers (you can get here by canoe or snowmobile as well).

Hi Ray No, Churchill is further north on Hudson's Bay than Moosonee. Moosonee is not far north (about the same as London), just isolated due to lack of road communications. I hae more pictures of Moosonee at www.lantz.ca I have seen one program that showed the train coming here. It included a line to the effect that the train carried everything except automobiles....naturally the program included lots of footage of cars and trucks in Moosonee but the writers didnt seem to notice. I think it was called "The Last Train Across Canada". The program was made within the last decade. Paul

Now I know where your town is situaed, I understand how your opportunities are restricted. I remember seeing a TV programme here in England about your line which was presented by Alan Whicker. I remember him boarding the train at some remote place that lacked any kind of platform. This was when I was a young lad in the sixties! Did your town used to be called Churchill?
