Moosonee 2010

Assorted pictures taken in 2010 of Moosonee, Ontario. Moosonee is a small town located on the Moose River near the south end of James Bay in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is the northern terminus of the Ontario Northland Railway. Although the Moose River at Moosonee is relatively shallow, Moosonee is still a port for the shipment of goods further north. In the winter, trucks can travel on the winter road to Fort Albany, Kashechewan and Attawapiskat, communities along the West Coast of James Bay. In the summer barges make the trip to those places and others.
Across the river from Moosonee is Moose Factory Island, the site of the oldest English settlement in Ontario.

used to fly hunters up here in the 70's from florida when the runway was gravel, we flew a lockheed lodestar

When I was a child I remember my parents bringing me here. I was very young, maybe 5,so my memories are blurry, but I remember riding in a canoe with a young man. We all must have been headed to Moose Factory. My father was drawn to this part of the world - I don't remember if he knew someone here, I just remember an impression of quiet and beauty. I don't know if I will ever have the opportunity to return but your pictures are a lovely way to "visit" as an adult. Thank you for sharing.

To the person whose uncle was Vince England from the 50s commented that people lived in teepees. I grew up in that era. We did not live in teepees, we lived in tent houses and one room houses. For those more fortunate they lived or built themsekves 2to 3 bedroom homes. Just thought I would say.

I lived on the base from 1965 - 1972. My father was a fire fighter working for the Military. I was 9 years old when I left and still have great memories!

Lived in Moosonee from 1988-1993, working for Environment Canada as an aerological technician (aka the upper air station sending up the big balloons twice daily) .All of the buildings are gone (they were at the west side of the village, on the road going to the dump ! My daughter moved there to work 10 months ago and even though i have not as yet visited i am able to get a sense of the rugged beauty of the area through your excellent photos!

These pictures are indeed fascinating to me. I visited my uncle, Vince England, who had the store in Moosonee. It was in the late 50's and I can see how much progress towards comfort has taken place. Families stil lived in teepes and no radio reception was available. We took the train ("Blueberry Special") up from Timmins. Any time the train arrived in Moosonee, it would be greeted by most of the inhabitants, that being the most exciting event that day. If the food deliveries were for some reason interrupted, one would have to eat whatever they had in the store. It was an experience I shall never forget.

This is one of the best galleries I've seen on the net and I have looked at a lot of them, especially on flickr. The pictures bring back memories of a family trip to Moosonee quite a few years ago. Overall, the set is outstanding and I will put it in my "Favourites".

What is the average date for when the Moose River ice breaks up? For the period Aug 2009-March 2010, Moosonee averaged 5.75 F above the 1971-2000 average temperature for that period. So far in April (through April 14), the deviation has been +14.3 F above the 1971-2000 average for April. Roger Blanchard Sault Ste. Marie, MI
